Ripples in Time

A gorgeous rock formation on Taiwan’s northern shore.

These abstract patterns are embedded in the geology of Yěliǔ 野柳, a rocky promontory on the northeastern shore of Taiwan in Wànlǐ 萬里. The area is littered with hoodoos and other unusual sights but, as this photograph demonstrates, there is also much to be seen underfoot. These formations are ripples in deep time, reverberations of the upheaval that formed the nearby Dàtún Volcano Group 大屯火山群.
