Kaohsiung City (高雄市) is an artificial construct I've used to organize content on this blog. Much like neighbouring Tainan, the current entity known as Kaohsiung is an amalgamation of the downtown core and the rural hinterland. To better distinguish between the two I have amalgamated several inner city districts into this single region: Yánchéng (鹽埕), the historic Japanese colonial core of the city, Pier-2 Art Center (駁二藝術特區) and Love River (愛河); Qiánjīn (前金, or Cianjin); Xīnxīng (新興, or Sinsing); Sānmín (三民); Língyǎ (苓雅); Qiánzhèn (前鎮, or Cianjhen); Gǔshān (鼓山), home to Xīzǐwān (西子灣, or Sizhiwan), another old residential area steeped in history; and Qíjīn (旗津, or Cijin), a long, narrow sandbar island with numerous historic sites.
