Pantai Avoi is the beautiful beach leading up to Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the northernmost tip of Borneo, in the district of Kudat in Sabah, Malaysia. It was almost completely deserted and unspoiled when I visited in early 2013. Few foreigners know about it and locals tend not to spend a lot of time at the beach unless they’re fishing or crabbing. I only found out about it after booking a short stay at Tampat Do Aman, a small eco-resort in the jungle nearby. It is about as close to an idealized tropical paradise as I have ever been.
